Organic Observation

Typed by Pom

We've been buying organic foods for awhile now. Eggs, milk, vegetables, fruits, and meats all grown or fed organically. Yes, they obviously taste better and we do feel better eating them but there is also an additional benefit that took us awhile to catch on to. They last longer. I find this a bit bizarre because they have no kind of preservatives that would extend their shelf life. My husband eats a great deal of organic fruit and it stays fresh much longer than the non-organic variety. Regular lettuce would rust within a day in our refrigerator but the organic only had a little rust after a week. Our organic milk lasts quite literally weeks longer than its non-organic relative. And the meats seem more meaty. For example, we bought an organically fed turkey for Thanksgiving with no anti-biotics used and cage free and it was truly more meat than the regular turkeys we used to buy.

As an aside - I'd mentioned before that I smoke. My husband does too. While we're working on quitting - by working I mean that we are discussing it and considering ways to do it successfully - we've stumbled upon a brand of cigarettes that offers organic tobacco with absolutely no additives. That's what he is smoking now. Of course they don't offer them in a menthol, which is what I smoke, but they do have an "all natural with no additives" in menthol even though it's not organic. So we're both smoking these cigarettes in the hope that without all of the additives from the big name tobacco companies, we might be able to cut loose a bit of the addiction while still accomodating the habit until we're able to quit once and for all. Just thought I'd add that bit of information if anyone is in need of it.

The more you know...

So, you may die of emphasema, but you'll die healthier? lol! There's a twisted sort of logic to that, I suppose. Try Chantix and it might work for you. It helped me, at least long enough to get over the hump. It has been a year now.

This was a better post than you think.

I may die of organic emphysema! :oP Actually it's the fact that, despite it being a shitty habit, at least my shitty habit is having less impact on Gaia than others' shitty habit! lol It's not an attempt to be healthier for myself but to make less impact on Nature due to the effects of my own stupidity. Alleviating a wee bit of guilt anyway. If the fact that there are no added addictive qualities in this particular brand and that makes it easier to quit.. all the better.

From past experiences I don't know that Chantix would work well for me but we have kicked it around for my husband for sure.

I think one of the main reasons why organic produce (and milk, etc) lasts longer is that it is fresher.

Check into where the organic items are sourced from, and most likely, it is closer than the non-organic stuff from Chile, Argentina, or other far-distant parts of the US.

Less travel time = fresher = more shelf-life. I wonder if you buy non-organics from a local farmer, and compare to a nearby organic market, the Local will last a teensy bit longer as well, but have not been able to verify that experiment myself (lack of nearby organic market with similar produce to the non-organic item for proper comparison).

Still, kudos for making the switch and best of luck kicking the habit!

Maebius,

Interestingly a lot of our milk still comes from inside the US but still expires within a week after purchase. We have a local dairy that we are buying from now which is sort of organic or at least natural but their milk doesn't last as long as the organics that come from a few states over. Still the impact on Nature is less - at least if I don't think about it too deeply. If I did that would probably change my mind yet again!

Thank you for the well wishes in the quitting endeavor!
