I need someone to explain to me - like I'm an idiot because I may just be - how (and why) the USPTO (United States Patent and Trademark Office) is issuing patents for the medical benefits of cannabis if there is NO medicinal value to the drug and this is why the federal government claims it is a schedule I worthy drug. One need only go to the USPTO website and enter words like "cannabinoid" or "THC" or "Tetrahydrocannabinol" to find more than a thousand patents that have been filed for the techniques to extract those useful medical qualities from cannabis or for the specific medically beneficial attributes the plant offers. Yet our government - federal as well as most states - persist in persecuting and prosecuting those who use the plant for medical purposes or recreational purposes.

The government needs to choose a stance. Or better yet, legalize it either way, since it certainly is no worse than alcohol. Adults shouldn't be treated like children with the government to make decisions for them.
Thank you for that link. I had assumed (feared?) that such patents were out there, but hadn't thought to look up the source.
I find the whole concept sad, that big Pharma goes through such hoops to "patent" plant parts to begin with, if they are even potentially profitable.
It's a frikkin plant! Building a car, I can see a patent for, picking some weeds in your garden, crazy!
As I said before though, the evidence like actual patents, just keeps mounting up and up. It may still be a few years yet, but I can see no end-result of the recent state's bills for Medical usage, these patents, and such, that still includes a Federal outlawing of such things. It's slow, but it's happening little by little.
Granted, I agree this in-between period we are in now is jsut stupid. Eventually mainstream culture will cave in and embrace it like we did when Prohibition was abolished. I just hope it's more sooner than later.
Maebius, not only is it "BigPharma" getting these patents - our own government is holding at least 2 patents for the medical benefits of cannabis/cannabinoids all the while saying that it has NO medical benefits and keeping it a schedule I with no medical benefits. It's hypocrisy of the highest order!
I'll say it again - Our government, the ones keeping cannabis illegal, holds at least 2 patents for the medical benefits of cannabis/cannabinoids!
I'm not really sure how to respond to that realization. A simple /facepalm is too cliche, yet angry rantings don't seem to contribute the proper energy to this.
All I can say is.. wow.
Hypocrisy indeed!!! I'll have to go browse the archives of NORML now to see if they picked up on that particular nugget of fact...
