Valentine's Day

Typed by Pom

In a secular society we often lose sight of the original intent of a holiday's creation. Valentine's Day is no different. In fact it might have become the most far removed from its original intent than any other holiday we celebrate in the west - at least that I can think of. Therefore I have no personal difficulty in celebrating it. After 17 years with my husband, any excuse for romance is a welcome one. They are so few and far between after this amount of time that marking an occasion seems the best way to lend that air of expectation rather than resignation. It may seem contrived to place importance on a day like Valentine's Day, but better to use an accepted day than try to muster ambiance out of thin air in my case.

After all of these years I've learned that romance is not his specialty. Chivalry may not be dead, but it can be slightly comatose! Normally I don't mind at all, but this year I feel I'm due for something special if for no reason other than a change of pace and a turning of a new leaf. That's why I've decided to do all of the planning and all he needs to worry about is staying awake! This way I get romance the way I want it and he feels pampered and relieved at not having to measure up to some expectation. So I consider Valentine's Day to be an experiment in romance according to my own imagination. If all goes well perhaps I can set my sights on a decidedly more romantic experience - our upcoming anniversary.

I'll now return you to your regularly scheduled blogging.... my apologies for this decidedly off-topic entry.

Michael,

Umm. I guess if you want to show it to her, you should. Don't know why you want her to see it but I guess that's for you to decide.

Oh breaking up with someone ON Valentine's Day is just cruel! Ranks right up there with an anniversary or birthday!
